The old bishop’s town of Bressanone,
renowned for centuries of history, art and culture, was the
centre of the district’s religious life for a thousand years.
The famous cathedral and bishop’s palace host monuments and
museums that bear witness to centuries of glory of one of
the most famous bishop princedoms of the last few centuries.
One of the most famous bishop princes of this diocese was
Cardinal Niccolò Cusano, named after his home town of Kues,
a village in the Mosella valley near the Germanic city of
Treviri. It was here, in the attempt to reform the Church
that he clashed with the political authorities and the corrupt
abbess Verena from the convent of the Benedictine nuns of
Castelbadia, near San Lorenzo.
Today, a fully-equipped skiing area rises from behind the
city up to a height of 2500 metres, offering downhill runs
for skiers with varying skill levels.
The six-kilometre “Trametsch” slope takes skiers all the
way to Val d’Isarco where they can enjoy delicious specialities
of the valley’s traditional cuisine along with typical local
wines, including the famous winery products of the old abbey
of Novacella, in the immediate vicinity of the city
